A new legislation in Australia was passed on Thursday, which was to ban social media for children under the age of 16. In hopes of protecting the youth from harmful situations such as cyber bullying and scams/deceptions, there will be a possibility of the law inflicting other countries, such as Canada, the U.S., and Europe. It is claimed that "social media companies [are] harming young people" and that "[they] should absolutely be doing more to protect young people." Technology can be seen as toxic to kids without precautions from their parents. However, without parental supervision, how will the youth be protected from the toxic sides of social media? "A ban is an imperfect solution ... a simple solution to a very complex and nuanced problem." However, banning young children from social media has its pros and cons. Sure, it will protect them from the dangers of the internet, but it could create more problems than a positive effect. Many find it controversial and difficult to maintain as the ban could risk attracting more youth to disobey (when told not to, they do). It's best to explore when you're young, people say. Therefore, kids under 16 would try to search even the darks comers of the internet simply out of curiosity. As a lot of people are reliant on age verifications and restrictions, the ban could arise "[discouragement with] platforms improving content moderation and safety features." It's a complicated global problem to deal with because there are loopholes in every legislation. Ultimately, this new legislation is "too blunt a response for today's complex situation, and I stand by that.
